Our First 2 Weeks

Newborns are supposed to sleep all the time, right?? Right. Not. Our first week home was quite interesting! Sleepless nights, lots of screaming, no poopy diapers, etc. It was quite emotional for me as well, because I didn't know what to do! I called and talked to nurses, lactation consultants, and had tried everything they suggested to get him to stop crying and sleep. We decided maybe he wasn't getting enough to eat when I tried pumping and would only get an ounce. We decided to start supplementing with formula. As soon as we did that, we had a SAFISFIED baby!! It turns out my milk never really came in. I wasn't as bummed about the not being able to exclusively nurse but the fact that everyone puts so much pressure on moms to nurse. I am glad he got the important colostrum in the beginning and at least one breast milk bottle a day for 2 weeks, but it just was too much to try keep up with when there wasn't much of a supply.

I really didn't realize how common this is until I started talking to other people. In our classes and in the hospital, everyone puts so much pressure on nursing and basically throws out the guilt trip if you can't do it. Once I finally got the courage to just do what is best for us, I felt a million times better! Corbin was 6lb7oz at his one week check, so not back to his birth weight. Our dr was very supportive of our supplementing and we went back on Monday and he weighed 7lb4oz!!

Our latest struggle has been finding the right formula. We've been through constipation, projectile vomiting, and hopefully now are on the right track. This whole having a newborn thing is such a steep learning curve and an exhausting one at that!

Yesterday I started bleeding from my incision. Tim took me in to the dr and it turns out I had a hematoma. They drained it and there was lots of old blood. I had a sharp pain in that spot the last couple days so I should feel quite a bit of relief. I have to keep a dressing on it for the next couple days and hopefully the recovery goes even faster now! What's one more set back?!

Currently we're enjoying snuggles and naps on the couch and getting used to bassinets and swings. Slowly but surely!

Corbin's Birth Story

On Friday August 23rd, I worked hard to get things finished up and was telling people that I would be throwing a temper tantrum if I had to come back to work on Monday! I wasn't due til Wednesday, but was getting really tired of work and people commenting how I still hadn't had this baby yet! I was looking forward to a nice relaxing weekend complete with lots of naps.

On Saturday, Chelsey and Riggins came to hang out while Tim was combining! We had a great time just sitting around, talking baby stuff, and she sterilized all my bottles and helped get the last few things ready. We went for a short walk and I could definitely tell that this baby was on the downward move. Saturday night, Tim got home around 9pm and they had finished combining. We sat around and talked for a little bit and decided it was time for bed. I went to the bathroom and headed to bed. I bent over to pick up a pillow off the floor, and a big warm gush came running down my leg! I hurried up back to the toilet. I told Tim that I either peed myself or my water broke. I got my answer as I sat there and it just kept coming!!

Tim started to get nervous about what we should do. I told him that I was going to just go bed and try get some sleep and he should do the same. Shortly after lying down, contractions started. People aren't kidding when they say you'll know real contractions when you feel them!! I layed there for about a half hour timing the contractions, anywhere from 6-8 minutes apart. I called the hospital to let them know so they could get ready for me but told them I was going to stay home for a while longer. I tried to get some rest but that's pretty hard to do in 5-8 minute increments! Finally at 2:45 I had decided that contractions were getting strong enough that I wanted to head in. We loaded up our stuff and made our way to the hospital.

Once we got there, they put monitors on me and checked and I was already dilated to a 5! Things were progressing great and my dr would order the intrathecal. I was breathing through contractions and the meds couldn't come fast enough! Once I got the intrathecal I was able to get a little rest. The told me intrathecals take away about 80% of the pain. It sure wasn't long before I was at an 8 and contractions were miserable. Then the nurses and my dr started getting concerned because Corbin wasn't handing contractions well. His heart rate would dip down with each contraction and not quite come back up to where it should be. This went on for a while and I wasn't progressing. Eventually they gave me the option of waiting to get to 10, have an hour or two of pushing that he might not handle well, OR csection and get him out without more stress. After listening to his heartbeat a little longer we decided we needed to get him out.

At this point I turned into a total emotional wreck. Contractions were awful and often, I was concerned about my baby and just the fear of the unknown with the csection. It seemed to take forever for them to let Tim in the operating room after getting him dressed up in scrubs. About 10 minutes later, we got to hear the scream of our sweet boy! It was the most amazing sound ever and seeing him was the best moment. It turns out the cord was wrapped around his neck and shoulder and he was trying to come out with the right side of his head first. It wouldn't have been an ideal situation and probably would've ended in csection anyway. It broke my heart when Tim and Corbin had to leave me, but I am so thankful for my amazing doctor and the anesthesiologist who kept me sane during that half hour. Once I got wheeled into the recovery room they put Corbin skin to skin on my chest. Words cannot describe that feeling!! :)

So blessed to have this little man in my life!!

39 Weeks!!

Toes are all pretty and polished from my pedicure yesterday, nursery is ready, hospital bag packed (minus snacks!!), car seat base installed=game on!!

This last weekend leading up to the 39 week mark was awesome. Plenty of time to relax in my recliner with Jers, did a little bit of cleaning, rode in the combine til it broke down (didn't get much of a ride in that day...) and watched Lifetime movies! Of course then Monday came and I just dreaded coming back to work, mostly because I didn't want to hear the "Oh, you're still here" comments and all of the stares that come along with that! I've had a pretty busy week, so it hasn't been too terrible. I've got plenty on my to-do list still at work, but really feel like I'm getting it as close to tolerable for someone else to take over as I can!

I had a dr appointment yesterday afternoon. My blood pressure was a little bit high and since I've been having some swelling my dr wants to keep an eye on it. He wasn't concerned to the point of limiting my activity or anything, but I go back on Monday to see where we're at! I am dilated to 2 cm and 50% effaced, so he said my body is doing what it's supposed to be doing and there's progress, so that's really exciting! He also told me to think about how far over my due date I want to go and start deciding on a possible induction date if necessary. He doesn't want me to go past 41 weeks, so I guess there's an official end in sight!! :) THEN I had a little mini panic attack as I waited for the nurse to come back to check my blood pressure one more time. I think I suddenly experienced a little bit of every emotion possible thinking about how soon this baby will be here!! (Not like I've been waiting for 9 months or anything....) But, just the realization that sometime in the next week-two, I'll be responsible for another life! Ahhh! :) I almost forgot to add that I got to see a bunch of my former coworkers yesterday morning at a training and it is always so fun! Definitely feel the love from all of them! AND there was a lady who opened the door for me at the clinic and said, "You are just adorable!" I laughed and said thanks, and she's like, "No, really, honey, you just look so cute!" haha--totally made my day!! :)

It was the last "Ladies Night" for golf on Tuesday, so that was really fun! My dr was impressed that I was still golfing and told me to maybe try it again to see if it will help move things along! Well, lucky for me, I'm playing the Polk County Social Services scramble tonight! The girls on my team have never golfed before, so they were a little nervous that I wouldn't make it there. We're taking bets on how many times I'll hear, "Are you sure you should still be golfing?" Considering the fact that my dr gave me the go-ahead, and I'm PREGNANT, not FRAGILE, yes, I should definitely still be golfing! :)

You're all welcome for a completely "positive" blog post! I know it's been a while :)

38 Weeks!!

Ok, baby, we're ready when you are!!

Literally, I think we're as ready as we can possibly be! Everything that was on our "to do" list has been done. Now just the relaxing, enjoying spending time just the two of us, and waiting is about all that's left. I have to say, I'm not a huge fan of the end of pregnancy. I've had a pretty smooth experience with this baby, but I'm over it! I'm ready to be done and ready to meet this little person!! For the last 2 days, I have developed cankles. Yep, they're REALLY sexy and so uncomfortable! I try keep them up as much as possible and drink more water than a camel, but nothing seems to help. My doctor told me that this is something I might be blessed with til the end of this journey, and he wasn't concerned because my blood pressure was perfect.

A few other things about the end of pregnancy that I'm not enjoying include now 2 trips to the bathroom at night since baby has dropped quite a bit in the last week, can't get enough water, can't get comfortable (either while awake or sleeping), and the annoying comments people make! I'm tempted to hang a sign outside of my cubicle that says, "Yes, I am still here. I have __ days until my due date. Yes, I am aware that every day is closer to that date. AND I am uncomfortable, swollen, and anxious, if you really want to know how I feel!"

Ok, this really isn't all going to be about complaining, I promise! I had a busy weekend organizing cupboards and closets, and finishing our "deep clean" of the house. HUGE props to my amazing husband for doing the majority of the cleaning!! I would come home and there would be something more done every day! We also went out to the farm and celebrated all of the exciting events in the Caillier family recently. Tim's brother and his wife are going to make me an AUNTIE in February, and his youngest brother just got engaged! Pretty exciting stuff! Lots to look forward to!

Well, I think it's time to go lay down and stretch out this belly because someone has decided now would be a good time to try test his/her limits inside and it's not very comfortable!

Jersey says hi!! :)

Full Term!!

Best words to hear so far in this journey...."Congratulations, you're officially full term!" My doctor sent me with those words today as I left my appointment. Such a great feeling! The whole time during this pregnancy I was sure I would go early. I didn't have any specific reasons to think that, I just did. Well, now "early" is getting less and less, and my mentality has totally shifted to the fact that I'm probably going to have a September baby. I go back and forth thinking "this baby is coming so soon!" to "this baby is going to take forever to get here..."

This past weekend was bittersweet. We had a great weekend at the lake, but when Sunday came it was time to start really cleaning out the camper. Between harvest starting possibly this weekend or early next week, and then baby coming, it was our last weekend at the lake as a family of 3! (Jers, of course makes 3!) There have been so many things that I keep thinking are our "last times" doing them before our whole world changes. The only way I can think of it is bittersweet! I love being able to just do things when we want, with just Tim and I, but also SO excited for this new journey we're getting closer and closer to starting! We do plan on taking a trip to the lake in September, after baby is born, and between harvesting. The really nice part is that I'll be on maternity leave so we don't have to necessarily wait for a weekend. We'll just spend a little time out there and winterize the camper during that visit.

I haven't been feeling very well for the last few days, and my doctor said it's most likely a stomach bug (LUCKY ME!) so I am going to cut this short before I complain too much about that! :) I did find this article today on the "Last Days of Pregnancy" that was such an awesome read, and a good perspective for other people to read, too!

4 Weeks to go!!

I can't believe it's already the LAST day of July!! That means as of tomorrow it's August, finally the month of our due date! I realize that it is very possible that I could go into September, but like to think that I'll have a baby sometime in the next 4 weeks! I think we're about as ready as we're going to be, too.

I had a doctor appointment this morning and it was time to do my Group B Step test. Have I ever mentioned that I love the online chart system that Riverview has? The lab has already posted my results and I passed, so no antibiotics necessary during delivery! Yay! At my appointment he also checked baby's heartrate (150...pretty much the same as it's been the whole time), measuring right on time, and my blood pressure was good. Since was doing the strep test, he checked my cervix, too. 1 cm dilated, 30% effaced, and baby is definitely head down! So, not too much happening on the "progress" front, but like he said, it's better than being long, firm, and all closed up! Ok, doc, whatever you say! Cervix is also still a little posterior, meaning that it's still more behind the baby's head and eventually when baby fully "drops" and is ready for delivery, it will be fully anterior. Sorry for all the cervix talk this week, I just want to have it written down for myself so when baby #2 comes along I can compare notes at this stage in the game! :)

Otherwise, I've been feeling pretty decent. Had a nice burst of energy last night and went golfing and then cruising around Walmart to get a few things. Once I got home, though, the braxton hicks started in pretty hardcore, reminding me that I probably pushed a little too far. Eventually I just had to go lay down because nothing else was stopping them. I'm trying to keep positive and not complain too much during this last month, but it's so hard when things that I could do last week are no longer possible this week--or that I'm wiped out from doing the simple task of going downstairs to switch a load of laundry. In 4ish weeks I know I will forget all about how I'm feeling right now! :)

I found a cute list of "10 things you should do before going into labor." Here's how we're doing on it so far!

1. Take childbirth classes
~Check! and really glad we did!

2. See a Movie
~We went and saw Grown Ups 2 a couple weeks ago!

3. Know the breastfeeding basics
~I think I've got the basics down after researching and from our class

4. Pack your hospital bag
~Have been gathering things to go in it, but have yet to actually get the bag out and put anything in it! Need to get on that and start a list for things that we use every day that will need to remember to grab.

5. Program important numbers into your phone
~I think we've got this taken care of!

6. Freeze some meals
~Been thinking about doing this, too. I know it will be super helpful to have it done for when we come home! (Especially since chances are Tim will be in the middle of combining or prehaul for beets)

7. Get a crib and wash the sheet
~Done a long time ago! 4 sets of sheets ready to go!

8. Install the car seat
~Not yet....we've practiced putting the car seat in and out of the base, but haven't put the base in the car yet.

9. Make a labor playlist
~Hadn't really thought of doing this, but never know what might be helpful during labor, so why not! An ipod and my small portable speakers are a pretty easy thing to throw in the hospital bag.

10. Read a novel
~JUST finished a really awesome book last night!! I'm bummed though because I have to wait until March 2014 for the next book in the series to come out. Luckily I think I'll be occupied enough in that time :)

35 Days!! (Give or take)

5 weeks to go!! This week's biggest accomplishment has been finishing the nursery! As of right now, I think we're as ready as we're going to be! The next task is packing the hospital bag. Otherwise, just waiting on our sweet little honey to bake a little bit longer!

We had a great weekend up in Hallock! It felt so good to be back after not having been up there for a couple months. I got to see a lot of people I hadn't seen in a really long time! I only wish I would've worn a shirt that said, "I'm due August 28th, and no we don't know if baby is a boy or girl!" Oh, and "I'm feeling fine, and handling the heat just like everyone else is!" By the end of the weekend I was getting pretty exhausted from those same questions! But all in all, a great weekend!

I have noticed baby starting to drop a little bit, mostly with being able to breathe better and when I am sitting up and try sit with my legs together it's uncomfortable! So lady-like! :) I've been nauseous still about an hour or so after eating and once I eat something for lunch it takes a really long time to digest before I'm hungry again. I can't wait to have my normal stomach back!

We had our final childbirth class last night and it was on breastfeeding and infant CPR. It was a very interesting class, and a nice reminder to have family and friends "brush up" on knowing what to do in a situation where the baby may need CPR or may be choking. All in all, I'm really glad we took the classes and had such a great teacher, because I feel very prepared going into all of this because of what we learned!

Before I get back to work and put up my swollen feet, I wanted to share a recipe for "Lactation cookies" that I have been recommended to try! Some of the ingredients you can only get at a natural foods store, so I found them at Amazing Grains in downtown Grand Forks. Apparently they are REALLY good and help boost milk supply! (Great gift for a new mom, too, if you're into baking!) I'm going to bake them soon and freeze them for when we're heading to the hospital! Follow the link for the recipe!

Almost forgot to mention that I had a doctor appointment on Monday and everything looks great with baby! All of the pains and uncomfortable "moments" I've been experiencing are "typical." I figured as much! I go back next Wednesday for my Group B strep test to see if I'll need antibiotics during labor, and then he'll check to see if I've progressed at all and get a 'for sure' on baby's position!!
